Just Like
a King

One Hour
Before
the Dawn

I pour another coffee, and I light a cigarette
I have no heart for stereo, T.V. or Internet.
The telephone is silent, but I pray that you will ring
For I long to feel the happiness that only you can bring.

There is emptiness without you, for you are my closest friend
And the comfort of your presence is a thing I miss no end.
It’s a sharing, it’s a calmness, it’s a privilege and pleasure
And, to me, it is a priceless thing, impossible to measure.

Now my heart is aching sorely, for the time is ticking by
And my prowess as a poet is reducing to a sigh.
Yet, there is a consolation that our friendship does allow
For I know that, somewhere in the dark, you’re thinking of me now.

And once again, my spirit lifts, I think of sunny days . . .
A dreamy walk upon a hill that overlooks the bays.
Where, tenderly, you took my hand, you did not move away,
And for me, those precious moments were like Heaven for a day.

You made me feel just like a King, but riches can’t compare
With the way your eyes were smiling as the wind blew through your hair.
I’ll remember it forever, until all my days are done.
The blessed memory of my day beside you . . . in the sun.

Someday, I hope to hold you, and again rebuild your trust
And help to heal those scars of lies, deception . . . and of lust
So, for what I’m worth, I’m here on earth . . . and God is there above you.
By His great power such blessings shower – how very much I love you!

I know I’m not the first to say such tender words to you
And how their shattered dreams have made you feel forsaken, too.
For, in all my life, I’ve known the pain of broken dreams as well
They can take a life of happiness, and make it bloody hell.

Such destiny could only come from God’s Almighty hands
That brought us both together from our distant native lands,
Every night I kneel and thank Him for His mercy from above
And for all I’ve ever wanted . . . in the woman that I love.
