There’s one level of separation
just one, that’s it (I call it the terminator line)
and u can tell – quickly, whether
or not
u like the taste of gun metal
deep in the back of your mouth
or maybe
it’s that baby hissssssss
of gas that turns you
on
I’ve been walking up and down this block
and it’s so, so easy
to
pick that blue Chevy, right there
and say, “you’re the one, you’re gonna deliver me, set me free!!”
and take that final leap
off the curb
too scared
I always let that blue Chevy pass
won’t even make eye contact
too scared – yes!
unsure – yes!
un-willing – ?
which side of the line am I on?
straddling the fence, so
to speak – (y? just up and do it already: a million reasons to call it
quits
& hit the showers)
(I can’t, don’t u see?)
a million reasons
to stay on that curb, or shut off that stove, or very
very
gently, release
that
trigger
Man –
screw symbols
I’ve always dreamt of hanging, legs twitching, broken
neck and out –
stretched
tongue
(god damn, it came out)
And there you have it folks, straight out, no powdered sugar or training
wheels
gimmee enough rope, and I’ll be a self-made man, an entrepreneur!
(liar, ur scared of everything, just name it and ur phobic, ticks even!)
(I know, ticks, but they’re deadly . . . lime disease! Y shouldn’t I be
scared)
(u SHOULD, and that’s HOW you know)
(know what?)
(which side of the line to call home, that’s what, if u still fear the
physical then u can’t be prepared for the infinite)
(but, what IS the infinite?)
(oh, that’s simple, just
ask the dead, they’ll be waiting)
that’s right –
waiting
waiting!
for
us all –
YOU
know who you are, I can only say
one thing
lover:
don’t tempt the empty, let
the numbers
come up as they will
