I wrote my first poem when I
was in third grade. At the time, a classmate of mine had been diagnosed with leukemia and
another classmate and I decided to write stories and poetry to sell to help raise money
for her. We didnt get much, but did get enough to buy her a get well gift, which was
all we should have expected. By the time the town had raised enough money for her surgery,
it was too late. She was too ill to be able to survive it.
After that, I didnt really write much until I was in junior high, and I continued
throughout high school. During a summer course, I learned new techniques in a creative
writing class at Morehead State Universitys Upward Bound Program. I was told by many
of my teachers that I should be a writer when I graduated, and should major in English. I
never really wrote anything for anyone else to read. It was more to simply get my thoughts
out, sort of a diary. Besides, I had another passion . . . computers.
I have been able to merge my two passions into one with my web page, The Poets Nest.
These two things, writing poetry and writing web pages, are very addictive. I recently
graduated with a Computer Science degree, a minor in Mathematics, and a proficiency
certificate in Japanese. Thats all resume stuff, but it is the poetry I write that
keeps me sane.
