He was a good man
and he showed her
all his love
He listened to birds
and whistled soft replies
in her direction
He lit candles in summer
and found moments
to softly caress her
There were nights
quiet nights
when he held her
He liked walking
hand in hand, bare-footed
on crisp fall beaches
With her, he had no need
of fantasy or daydreams,
she was everything
Everything
he ever wanted
in a perfect world
But sound – words
never traveled farther
than his arms could reach
And she was always
too far away
to hear him whisper
