Destruction of a Poem

A poem
Beautiful in its simplicity
suddenly brought under scrutiny.

Its lovely straightforwardness denied
deeper meaning must be found
for what is the use of an obvious poem?

Tortured, the life beaten out of it
the once-beautiful poem is still
Its words no longer a flowing symphony.

The hidden insinuations
have supposedly been found
leaving it twisted and ruined.

If only a poem
could be taken for what it is
a sweet, simple song of the mind
